Backpackers, fasands of them…

Our stay in Cairns was pretty dull and it rained a lot, so this entry ain’t got much going for it. The motel we stayed in was pretty grubby, but for $80 we got what we paid for and I could finally take a shit without hearing an old man straining in the cubicle next door. There is a café in Cairns called Café Fika, which specialises in Swedish food, so of course we went there.

An Ikea substitute!
Cairns is an odd town, slightly run down and full of backpackers. We wandered round finishing our big town business while the car was serviced. The car was flagged with a few problems, but it all sounded a bit like they wanted a few jobs off us. The RACQ had already checked it over, so I decided he was full of shit… If we crash due to the rear brakes going, I’ll have to apologies to Kmart automotive in Cairns. I was glad there was nothing major needed on the car because, despite all the luxuries of flushing toilets, beds off the floor and wifi, I was itching to get back on the road again.

Cairns beach at its finest...
The plan now is to follow the Savannah Way through to Katherine in the Northern Territory (NT). The first stop will be Undara NP, then onto Normanton, after which we’ll pass through Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) NP and then onto NT. The phone reception and internet will start to get choppy, so posts might be a little light, but hopefully there will be more to talk about than what happened in Cairns… I bored myself into a bad mood writing this.

  1. Yep can't say I have any burning need to go back to the land of my youth. Here is hoping that the NT delivers an amazing, crowd free, wilderness experience. Just remember to stay out of the creeks! All good back in the big smoke. Cheers Ric
